Common Pauraque (Nyctidromus albicollis)

The Common Pauraque is a medium-sized, long-tailed nightjar with white bands near the wing tips, and mainly white rectrices. It is widely distributed in the Neotropics, from south Texas to northern Argentina and Uruguay. Nyctidromus albicollis is found in open tropical woodlands, savanna, and scrublands, e.g., close to human habitation; up to 2,300 m. It nests on the ground; two pale pink eggs are laid in a scrape in dirt or leaf litter. Incubation is by both parents, 19-20 days. The young are semiprecocial and leave nest after 1-2 days. They are brooded and tended by both adults outside the nest site. This species feeds on insects (beetles, moths, hymenopterans, orthopterans, etc.), catching them in flight, usually by making short sallies from the ground.
